Video hosting YouTube announced the launch of the Shorts service, which is an analog of the TikTok app. Its users will be able to share videos up to 15 seconds long, overlaying them with music.

The release of apps copying TikTok features by two of Silicon Valley's largest companies, Google and Facebook, prompts thoughts that the IT giants decided to seize the moment and turn to an already proven algorithm to launch their identical projects while TikTok is going through bad times. Moreover, if TikTok is indeed banned in the States, American users will have no choice but to switch to Shorts and Reels until the controversy between the U.S. and China is resolved. There is no data yet on whether this service will be available in other countries.

YouTube Shorts has a wide selection of music tracks. The media library includes tracks from more than 250 artists and labels. And the interface of the developed YouTube site is similar to Tik Tok. The fundamental difference from the Chinese platform will be the integration of Shorts in YouTube's mobile app.

The service will not offer any fundamental innovations. It's based on an endless stream of short videos that you can quickly scroll through and view the ones you like. You can subscribe, like, and comment on the authors of interesting videos. Nothing new.

The head of the department, involved in the development of the new feature, Todd Sherman noted that the site Shorts was created as a tool to unlock the creative potential of users. Owners of channels on the hosting service will be able to link it to YouTube Shorts. That way, they would have the advantage of a loyal audience that would migrate to Shorts, supporting short videos with activity.

The rise in popularity of short videos

If artificial intelligence were tasked with coming up with the most engaging content for teens, it would come up with TikTok. The argument is that there are many "established masters creating videos under 10 minutes long" on the video hosting site. The creation and launch of Shorts is, according to the company, a continuation of the development of YouTube. The platform will maintain interest in the hosting service and give those who can't or don't like to make long videos a chance to express themselves.
